Recent yo-yo design innovation has turned the Number One Toy of the 20th Century into a sophisticated piece of sports equipment. Current ball-bearing performance quality yo-yos have increased the caliber of tricks performed by all players. The ease of using a ball-bearing yo-yo encourages new players to learn advanced skills faster than ever before. More players are competing in contests and enjoying the sport than any time in history. Yo-yoing has become a fresh entertaining activity for a whole new generation.

Todays contests have developed new formats. At the National Yo-Yo Contest, there are two competition levels, the highly competitive Championship Division and a more recreational Sport Division.

The Championship Division encompasses the 1A, 2A, 3A, 4A, and 5A styles of play where competitors perform a freestyle routine made up of tricks of the players choice.

1A division competitors use one long-spin yo-yo to perform intricate trick manipulations of both string and yo-yo.

2A division competitors use two looping yo-yos simulataneously in looping tricks that require quickness and timing.

3A division competitors use two long spin-yo-yos to perform intricate string tricks simultaneously with both yo-yos.

4A (Offstring) competitors use a yo-yo that is unattached to the string but still is able to return to the hand.

5A (Freehand or Counterweight) competitors use a weight on the string instead of attaching the string to the hand.

Competitors qualify to the National Contest by placing well in one of the nine Regional Yo-Yo Contests that are part of the National Yo-Yo League and can be seeded directly to the finals by winning their Regional Contest.

The Sport Division is comprised of the Sport Ladder which is a series of compulsory 1A style tricks and 2A style tricks. A competitor works his or her way up two 25 trick ladders with increasingly difficult tricks. The Sport Ladder is a fun way for players of all ages and abilities to participate in the competitive aspect of yo-yoing.

The National Spin-Top contest is held in conjunction with the National Yo-Yo Contest each year. Design changes seen yo-yo production have also changed spin-tops. The complexity of tricks have increased dramatically as the design improvements that revolutionized the sport of yo-yoing have also made their way into the spin-top.

All attendees will find there is time to swap tricks, meet new friends, and learn from the best players. Manufacturers are always in attendance to highlight and debut new products. Collectors also display during the day at the contest site.
